Dr. Brendan Murphy, President of Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) to chair Institutes of Technology Ireland (IOTI) for 2011
A native of Tralee, Dr. Murphy is a mathematics and statistics graduate and has lectured at CIT since 1974. A fellow of the Royal Statistical Society and of the Irish Computer Society, he is also a Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the Institute of Engineers of Ireland.
His two priorities for his year as Chair of IOTI are:
- The implementation of the National Strategy for Higher Education (being launched on January 11th), especially in relation to the Institutes of Technology, and establishing Technological Universities;
- Ensuring that the IoT sector proactively contributes to Ireland's recovery. Dr Murphy is multi-lingual and widely published. He was Head of the Department of Mathematics and Computing at CIT from 1988 to 2003 and Head of the School of Computing and Mathematics from 2003 until he took up the position of President in September 2004.
During that time he established partnerships throughout Europe and served on numerous advisory boards. He is a director of HEAnet and is also a member of the Expert Group on Future Skills Needs.
