Tourism Learning Networks

Fáilte Ireland is Ireland’s National Tourism Development Authority. It supports Ireland’s development as a high-quality and competitive tourism destination. The organisation’s vision for Irish tourism is a dynamic, innovative, sustainable and highly regarded sector offering international and domestic visitors a positive and memorable experience. Irish tourism supports over 17,000 separate enterprises, most of which are SME’s or micro-enterprises. To support these companies, Fáilte Ireland established Tourism Learning Networks (TLN) – action orientated network learning environments aimed at developing business capabilities in the tourism industry.

Since 2006, the School of Business at Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) has designed and delivered Fáilte Ireland TLN’s for the South West and South East Regions. A team at WIT’s School of Business designed and delivered a twelve month programme that combines interactive workshops, e-learning, residential events, themed seminars, mentoring and network meetings. A Delivery Team based in both regions at WIT and Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) also works to understand learning requirements and customise the training to individual needs.

Between 2006–2009, over 540 businesses participated in the TLN programme with 209 graduating with a Level 6 Certificate in Tourism Business Practice awarded by WIT. A further 91 participants will graduate in January 2011. Participating businesses gained enhanced managerial competencies and skill-sets, and benefitted from networking opportunities such as cross referrals, cooperative marketing, enhanced business practice and connections. Representing a unique approach to training for the Tourism and Hospitality sector, the TLN has had a wider impact through the larger national network. This has helped Fáilte Ireland to achieve its strategic goal of improved small firm competitiveness in Irish tourism.
