Improving the Sanitation Process within a Dairy Farm

Dairymaster, based in Co. Kerry, is one of the world’s leading milking equipment manufacturers, with exports to 37 countries. The company develops unique, technologically advanced solutions aimed at making dairy farming more profitable by reducing long term costs and labour inputs. They have made pioneering advances in such areas as milking parlour equipment, automatic scrapers, automatic cow feeding systems and farm management computer packages.

The Centre for Intelligent Mechatronics and Sensors (CIMSS) at the Institute of Technology, Tralee (IT Tralee) is a platform for the convergence of engineering and science research The research interests of CIMSS include the integration of intelligent electro-mechanical systems, robotics and sensors for applications for the agricultural, biomedical and energy industries. Its main aim is to interact with regional and national industries to generate sustainable, flexible solutions.

Dairymaster produces an auto-washer for the cleaning and sanitisation of on-farm milking machines. Supported by an Enterprise Ireland Feasibility Study grant, Dairymaster commissioned CIMSS to carry out a feasibility study for the redesign of the auto-washer to produce an intelligent, automated system that would reduce water usage, detergent and energy consumption during the washing process.

Having analysed the current system within the farm environment, CIMSS studied the automation of these results using a turbidity sensor, which monitors and adjusts conditions according to changes within the system. The feasibility study showed that an intelligent, automated auto-washing system is possible and that such improvements would be of benefit to the dairy industry.

As a direct result of this feasibility study, IT Tralee and Dairymaster were successful in a full Enterprise Ireland Innovation Partnership application and this will allow the company to continue its R&D work to bring an intelligent solution to market.

Testimonials

“Dairymaster were very pleased to engage with the Centre for Intelligent Mechatronics and Sensors (CIMSS) at the Institute of Technology, Tralee and we were very pleased with the expertise, service and results that the centre provided us with. Working with external personnel who can deliver results and bring their expertise to a project allows us concentrate on our core activities in the manufacture and marketing of milking equipment. We hope to continue with this successful collaboration in the future.”
Dr. Edmond Harty, Technical Director, Dairymaster

“CIMSS at the Institute of Technology, Tralee was delighted to work on this feasibility project with Dairymaster. We hope that this feasibility study is a platform for further research and development across a number of key areas in the agricultural engineering area in collaboration with Dairymaster. The knowledge generated for CIMSS during the project has allowed us to get a clear understanding of the technology capabilities required and its potential for making an impact in the market place.”
