CIT supports RedMere Technology Ltd, a highly successful Irish Start-up Company

RedMere Technology Ltd was co-founded in 2004 by Dr. John Horan, then an employee of Cork Institute of Technology (CIT), and Mr. Peter Smyth and Mr. Declan Farrelly. The company is now a leading provider of next-generation connectivity solutions for high definition entertainment systems, employing around 30 people in offices in Cork, Dublin, Silicon Valley and Taiwan.

As a start-up company, RedMere was based in the incubator facility at CIT, The Rubicon Centre. The centre provides state-of-the art enterprise facilities and business expertise for start- ups. Its location within the CIT campus also offers access to excellent research capability and facilities. Residency within The Rubicon Centre provided RedMere with the assistance and flexibility to ramp up quickly and to concentrate on the development of their product range.

RedMere’s product range includes innovative HDMI cables that contain a self- powered chip. This chip technology results in cables that are ultra-thin and light and are therefore easier to bend, route and disguise after installation. RedMere wished to develop the capability to test the integrity of the signal transmitted by these high-speed cables, but lacked the embedded systems expertise required.

The TEC Centre forms part of the NIMBUS Centre for Embedded Systems research at CIT and has experience in applied research projects in partnership with industry. RedMere partnered with the TEC Centre in a research project partly funded by an Enterprise Ireland Innovation Voucher. This partnership resulted in the development of a prototype component which is now integrated in to RedMere’s new V200P product. This is a second generation advanced tester designed to measure the performance characteristics of the cable assembly and confirm whether they meet the signal integrity requirements.

The partnership between CIT and RedMere has resulted in the establishment of an investment-ready company with a high technology product range. In 2010, RedMere received the prestigious Irish Technology Leadership Group/Irish Times Innovation Award at a ceremony held in Stanford University, California. The ITLG is a prominent independent organisation that supports Irish start-ups and creates visibility among US technology companies.

RedMere has become a quality research partner for CIT and Dr. Horan is actively involved as an industry advisor for CIT’s NIMBUS Centre.

“CIT has been a very important supporter and partner for RedMere. The facilities and support provided by the Rubicon Centre helped accelerate the growth of our early stage company. Subsequently, the expertise provided by researchers in CIT’s TEC Centre has enhanced our product development capability and contributed to creating a company and product range with significant value.”
Dr. John Horan - CTO Redmere Technology Ltd.

“RedMere was one of the first Rubicon clients. We learned from RedMere, the particular requirements of high technology start-ups and the need to be flexible and responsive in support of such startups. In addition, RedMere and Dr Horan have proved to be a generous partner in terms of their advice and technical input to both the TEC Centre and the NIMBUS Centre.”
