IT Tralee Industry led Undergraduate Projects

The dairy industry is becoming a highly competitive farming environment. As a result, dairy farmers are demanding technologies that will reduce their costs and increase capacity whilst maintaining the quality of their products. Dairymaster, based in Co. Kerry, is a world leader in the manufacture of milking equipment. The company specialises in the development of automated mechanical technologies that aim to make dairy farming more profitable. They have made innovative developments in milking parlour equipment, automatic cow feeding systems and farm management computer packages.

Dairymaster has worked on several collaborative research projects with the Centre for Intelligent Mechatronics and Sensors (www.CIMSS.ie) at the Institute of Technology, Tralee and have an ongoing partnership.

The CIMSS, based in the School of Engineering at IT Tralee, promotes the research convergence between industry and academia to generate long term sustainable and flexible solutions for industry. The centre focuses on the integration of intelligent electro-mechanical systems, robotics and sensors for industrial applications in agriculture, energy and healthcare.

In 2010, the final year students of the Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical and Electronic Engineering at the Institute of Technology, Tralee were encouraged to undertake industrially focused research projects. Some of these projects were in collaboration with Dairymaster. The projects ranged from remote parlour system monitoring, intelligent cleaning-in-place systems to improved auto ID antenna designs. During these projects, the students worked with mentors from within Dairymaster and the company benefited from the expertise and results provided by the IT Tralee students.

At the end of the academic year, a competition was held to identify the best engineering project. The competition was sponsored by Dairymaster as part of their ongoing collaboration with CIMSS.

The winning project was designed by Padraig Kennedy who developed an intelligent cow foot bath design. He was awarded a prize of a Dairymaster crystal trophy, €500 cash and a 3 month summer studentship at Dairymaster. After his 3 month studentship, Padraig was offered a full time position at Dairymaster and is now a project engineer in the mechanical design office.

IT Tralee and Dairymaster are continuing their collaborative partnership, which will allows the company to continue its R&D work and to bring more intelligent solutions to market.

Testimonials

“Dairymaster were very pleased to engage with the Centre for Intelligent Mechatronics and Sensors (CIMSS) at the Institute of Technology, Tralee and with the expertise, service and results that the students provided us with. Working with external personnel who can deliver results and bring their expertise to a project allows us concentrate on our core activities in the manufacture and marketing of milking equipment. We hope to continue with this successful collaboration in the future.”
Dr. Edmond Harty - Technical Director, Dairymaster

“CIMSS at the Institute of Technology, Tralee were delighted to work in collaboration with Dairymaster on student industry based projects. These projects allowed the students to develop skills to address real world problems that they would face in industry. The knowledge generated for CIMSS during the project has allowed us to get a clear understanding of the technology capabilities required and its potential for making an impact in the market place.“
