Doctorate in Business Administration – Linking Theory and Practice

Outside Thinking provides consultancy to companies and communities engaging in strategic planning and design, and in this case was involved in an urban/regional rejuvenation project in the South East Region of Ireland. This project sought to engage the business and social community in the design and development of an urban ‘coordinated creative space’.

To gain the skills necessary to simultaneously engage a number of communities in this common goal of a ‘coordinated creative space’, Monica Leech, the CEO of Outside Thinking embarked on the Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA) programme at Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT).

The DBA is a distinctive programme which facilitates the application of advanced research study to business problems and issues. The programme focuses on developing the skills required to contribute to the enrichment of trans-disciplinary professional practice in management, and to lead organisations and communities facing a complex global business environment.

DBA participants are senior executives from both Public and Private Sector organisations. The programme is based on an innovative three-stage model which guides each participant through the doctoral process. It incorporates a number of residential and campus based workshops, physical and virtual informal meetings, and independent research, maintaining a balance between peer- and self-led learning within the programme.

This programme benefits from an interactive web-based learning environment that was developed in liaison with the WIT eLearning team. This allows participants to contribute to live discussions and share insights on their research.

A comprehensive review of prevailing literature allowed Outside Thinking to gain a better understanding of stakeholder engagement in the ‘creative’ process. This engagement has informed Monica’s research model. Monica also maintained a reflective log throughout the research cycle, chronicling both the research journey and her own personal journey of self development.

Through bridging the gap between theory and practice, this research will add to the field of place-branding knowledge and will seek to provide guidance for further studies in this relatively new discipline.

Testimonials

“My participation in the DBA programme has yielded enormous benefits in my approach and contributed to the strategic direction of my business research. In coupling a newly gained knowledge of the current literature and best practice in my field of study with my day-to-day experience on the ground I have gained new insights and seen my understanding of the complexity of stakeholder engagement result in breaking new ground. On a personal development front, the practice of reflection in my business life and decision making has been very valuable learning.”
Monica Leech - CEO, Outside Thinking

“Our DBA is rooted in the need to stimulate business leaders to be critically minded, to question their current strategy and operation and to contribute knowledge through research that will shape the strategic direction of their firms and potentially the wider business community. The value to WIT, the School of Business and faculty is that prolonged deep engagement at this level of business offers academic-practitioner collaborative action beyond that normally offered in relationships of this nature.”
