Advances in Medical Technology through Convergence

The Life Sciences Skillnet offers a series of training programmes, which are designed to up-skill employees and boost productivity across different industry sectors in Ireland.

The Biomedical Diagnostics Institute, (a Science Foundation Ireland- funded Centre for Science, Engineering and Technology at Dublin City University) and the Applied Optics Group (National University of Ireland, Galway) wished to develop a training programme targeted at the Irish medical device sector. It was envisaged that this programme would offer training in the latest medical technologies and processes. Both the Biomedical Diagnostics Institute and the Applied Optics Group felt that training in relation to medical device software processes would be an important component of the programme and sought expertise in relation to this.

The Regulated Software Research Group (RSRG) at Dundalk Institute of Technology (DKIT) is an internationally recognised research group, led by Dr. Fergal Mc Caffery, a Science Foundation Ireland Principal Investigator and Stokes Lecturer. The group performs innovative applied research that is focused on improving medical device software development processes, making them safer and more efficient. This expertise in software development positioned the RSRG as the perfect partner in this collaboration.

Over a period of several months, the RSRG collaborated with the Biomedical Diagnostics Institute and the Applied Optics Group to develop a suite of courses called Advances in Medical Technology through Convergence (AMTC). Funding for the development of the AMTC was provided through the Life Sciences Skillnet training programme for industry. All three research centres are funded through Science Foundation Ireland.

There are currently 15 courses, offered by the three partner colleges, which are designed to help participants understand the latest advances in medical technology. Participants can attend the courses as stand-alone courses or complete the full suite. The RSRG at DKIT is responsible for the delivery of three courses that are focused upon introducing cutting-edge regulatory compliant medical device software processes into the Irish medical device industry.

The AMTC currently forms part of the Life Sciences Skillnet and is being run in association with the Irish Medical Devices Association (IMDA). The AMTC courses that have been delivered so far have been well received by members of the medical device industry. In addition to transferring knowledge from the research groups to industry, these courses also provided additional opportunities for collaboration between each of the research groups and the industry participants.

Testimonials

“Through working with Dr Fergal Mc Caffery from the Regulated Software Research Group we were able to include medical device software process courses within the AMTC programme.”
Fergus Fleming - Commercial Strategy Manager, Biomedical Diagnostics Institute

“The Applied Optics Group at NUI Galway welcomed the opportunity to collaborate with the RSRG and the BDI to provide a unique range of specialist technical training services to the Medical Device Sector in Ireland. This is a good case study of research centres working together to establish a channel of knowledge and technology transfer to one of Ireland’ key industries.”
Una Murphy - Director of Industry and External Relations, Applied Optics Group, NUI Galway
